Meet the Farm & Wild Animals of De Leeuwenhof Estate

At De Leeuwenhof Estate, we pride ourselves on being more than just a beautiful place to stay. Our farm is teeming with life, both domesticated and wild, giving guests a truly immersive experience of nature. Here’s a little introduction to the friendly farm animals and elusive wild creatures you might meet during your stay.

Our Friendly Farm Animals
Chickens (Including Chinese Silk Chickens)
Our flock of chickens includes a few special members—Chinese Silk Chickens. Known for their fluffy, silk-like feathers, these chickens are both adorable and a bit exotic. They roam freely around the estate, adding a charming country vibe to the surroundings.

Donkey and Pony
Who could resist the gentle nature of a donkey and a pony? These lovable animals have become a favorite among guests, especially the little ones. They’re always up for a gentle pet or a friendly nuzzle and add a wonderful rural character to the estate.

Dogs
At De Leeuwenhof, our rescue dogs are part of the family. Each has its own story, and while many are now in their golden years, they enjoy the wide-open spaces and endless attention from guests. They are loyal companions and a big part of what makes our farm feel like home.

Wild Visitors Around the Estate
Cape Winelands Squirrels
These energetic little creatures can often be seen darting between the trees or foraging for food. Their antics are a delightful sight for anyone taking a peaceful stroll through the estate gardens.

Hadidah (Ibis)
The Hadidah, also known as the Ibis, is a common sight around the Cape Winelands. Their distinctive calls are often heard in the mornings as they explore the estate, adding a touch of wild beauty to the atmosphere.

Cape Eagle Owl
If you’re lucky, you might spot a majestic Cape Eagle Owl resting in the trees during dusk. These magnificent birds are known for their large size and striking appearance, and their presence adds a magical element to the evenings here.

African Harrier Hawk
Another raptor you might encounter is the African Harrier Hawk. Known for its impressive wingspan and graceful flight, this bird of prey is often seen soaring over the estate. It’s always a treat to catch a glimpse of these magnificent hawks as they scan the land below.
